Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) is a community-made runtime extender for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that expands the game’s scripting capabilities well beyond what the base engine and Papyrus expose. Developed by Ian Patterson, Stephen Abel, and Paul Connelly (known as ianpatt, behippo, and scruggsywuggsy the ferret), SKSE adds new native functions, an extensible plugin API, and low-level access to engine internals, enabling complex mods and frameworks that would otherwise be impossible. SKSE does not alter gameplay on its own; it serves as a foundational dependency for many advanced mods.
SKSE is available in different builds for the original 2011 Skyrim (SKSE), Skyrim Special/Anniversary Edition (SKSE64), and Skyrim VR. It is version-specific and must match the exact game runtime; official game updates typically require a corresponding SKSE update before SKSE-dependent mods will work again. Installation is straightforward via a mod manager or by copying the provided files into the Skyrim directory and launching the game through the SKSE loader. SKSE is intended for the PC versions of the game and is widely used across the Skyrim modding community.
